A Blast From the Past: Pointless Guff

All of ten days ago (OK, I neglected blogging AND mail), James Taranto pointed to a poll showing that if the election were held "today" (when the poll was taken), the majority would have voted for the unspecified Democratic candidate.  As Taranto quipped:
Finally, a formula for Democratic success! All they need to do is (1) refrain from nominating a candidate, (2) arrange for the GOP to nominate someone who is constitutionally ineligible to run, and (3) hold the election in an off year.  What could be simpler?

Which brings up a point to keep in mind when reading such things: they're nonsense.  Elections can't be held without named candidates, and can only be held at designated times, after a campaign in which lots of people change their minds.

What the results mean is that half the poll sample was really disgusted with Bush, and used the poll question to vent.  BFD.  But lots of MSM outlets can be counted on to make much of this.  As a Republican, seeing them fool themselves this way is heartening.
