A Question About the CIA

When Robert Novak was writing his now famous column about Joe Wilson & Valerie Plame, he called the CIA to ask them if she worked there.  They confirmed that she did.

WHY?  In what way is it an advantage for the CIA to tell reporters who works for them?  Or an advantage to the U.S.A.?  Why didn't they just say 'As per our standing policy, we neither confirm nor deny that Valerie Plame Wilson works for the Central Intelligence Agency.  Regardless of whether she does or not, we request that you not publish any stories about who does or does not work for us.'

I'd really like to hear the CIA'a answer to that question.
